A dump truck driver was killed after his vehicle was hit by a Metra train Monday at the Hainesville Road crossing in Lake County around 7 a.m.
The lead car of the Milwaukee District North train derailed, but is upright and has not rolled over. A passenger was taken to hospital with what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries, officials said.
The accident results in service delays and road closures. Runners should check the Metra’s website for notifications about schedule changes.
“Service is stopped north of the stage; south of the stage, we’re running what service we can,” spokesman Michael Gillis said.
Train 2116 traveled from Fox Lake to Chicago. The locomotive was at the rear of the train and the cab was at the front. The cabin car has controls for an engineer to use and also accommodates passengers.
Metra said at least 40 passengers were on the train at the time.
Fox Lake, Ingleside, Long Lake, Round Lake and Grayslake runners should consider seeking alternate transportation, ABC 7 reported.
The collision is the second this month involving a fatality. A horsewoman died on May 11 in Clarendon Hills after a train hit a truck on the tracks.
