Traffic accident on Virginia Avenue in Fort Pierce: Cyclist, 30, dead

FORT PIERCE — A 30-year-old cyclist died after being hit by a vehicle Monday afternoon on Virginia Avenue, Fort Pierce police say.

The crash happened around 5 p.m. Monday in the 1900 block of Virginia Avenue as the cyclist, a male, was crossing the roadway from south to north, according to police spokesman Curtis Jennings.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene, Jennings said via text message.

Police did not immediately identify the deceased.

sergeant. Charles Donnon said the vehicle was traveling west on Virginia Avenue at the time. Early indications suggest the driver was not intoxicated or breaking any traffic rules, although further investigation is underway, he said.

Donnon said there were no crosswalks in the area or a traffic light.
