A reckless biker who was filmed riding in the rain as he was chased by police through the lanes of Brighton at 20mph has been jailed for five months.

Footage captured 24-year-old Ryan Burtenshaw being followed by officers in an unmarked police car and evading them as they drove through roadworks in the popular tourist destination.

When the officers finally caught up with him, he didn’t stop, but instead did a wheelie through the rain-covered streets.

Burtenshaw then accelerated back into the 20mph zone, narrowly avoiding collisions with pedestrians and other vehicles.

He was banned from driving for a year and eight months

If Burtenshaw ever wants to ride or drive again, he must take an extended retest once he is released from jail and no longer disqualified.

He managed to evade the Special Law Enforcement Unit (SEU) officers by bypassing the road works.

However, police identified him as the registered keeper of the motorbike and he later admitted to being the driver at the time of the offences.

Burtenshaw, of Brighton, admitted driving dangerously, failing to stop on the orders of a police officer, driving other than in accordance with a license and driving without valid insurance when he appeared at Lewes Crown Court.

Judge Christine Laing KC heard how Burtenshaw Constituency fell well below the standards of a safe, considerate and competent motorist.

He was imprisoned for five months and banned from driving for one year and eight months.

His motorcycle was also confiscated after the court imposed a restraining order on him under the Criminal Courts Act.

If he ever wants to ride or drive again, Burtenshaw must complete an extended retest once he is released from jail and no longer disqualified.

Chief Inspector Andy Saville, of Sussex Police, said: ‘This case demonstrates our determination to catch offenders and keep our roads and communities safe in Brighton and Hove.

“The offender in this case put his own safety and that of everyone else at risk.

“As a result, he was imprisoned, disqualified and his vehicle confiscated by the courts.”
