Pokemon TCG: VMAX Climax Secret Rare Preview: Shadow Rider Calyrex

|

The next Pokémon TCG premium set Climax VMAX, which will be released in December 2021 in Japan, was previously shrouded in mystery. Very little was known about how this set would appear to collectors and English-speaking players until the Pokémon TCG revealed that their February 2022 set, Sword and Shield – Shining Stars, would feature a 30-card subset called the Trainers Gallery. However, this week’s reveal of a shocking 100 Secret Rares in Climax VMAX has caused confusion as to what will appear in Sword and Shield – Shining Stars. Although speculation continues, let’s take a look at some of these rare secrets of Climax VMAX.

I will admit it. When I first heard that there would be six Calyrex cards in Climax VMAX, the New York in me came out. It’s OD, son. With some time passed since I discovered this, I still think it’s a bit is OD, because four Super Rare characters and two Black & Golds is a lot for a Pokemon of its popularity of which we just got four Alternate Arts earlier this year in Sword and Shield – Chilling Reign and the equivalent sets from Japan. You know what got me thinking, though? Look at the artwork on the Shadow Rider Calyrex V CSR up there on the left. Did this dreamlike, painterly illustration just turn a Calyrex card into one of my ultimate hunt cards? While I’m still on the “like not love” side about Ice and Shadow Rider Calyrex, the stylized expressive artwork here is a nice addition to the Pokémon TCG. The artist, Oswaldo KATO, is someone to whom I will pay special attention. KATO showed a wide variety of styles (check out all the cards credited to KATO here), the other being Golurk V Alt Art by Sword & Shield – Changing Skies. What’s perhaps most impressive is that the two cards are done in completely different styles.
