Pokemon TCG: VMAX Climax Secret Rare Preview: Ice Rider Calyrex

|

The next Pokémon TCG premium set Climax VMAX, which will be released in December 2021 in Japan, was previously shrouded in mystery. Very little was known about how this set would appear to collectors and English-speaking players until the Pokémon TCG revealed that their February 2022 set, Sword and shield – shining stars, would feature a 30-card subset called the Trainers Gallery. However, this week’s reveal of a shocking 100 Secret Rares in Climax VMAX has caused confusion as to what will appear in Sword and shield – shining stars. Although speculation continues, let’s take a look at some of these rare secrets of Climax VMAX.

Here we see two drastically different art styles in play with these super rare characters featuring Ice Rider Calyrex with his trainer, Peony. The Ice Rider Calyrex V has a kind of majestic, plaintive vibe as the trainer and Pokemon stand atop a snowy mountain, looking up at the sky as the morning sun begins to stretch with pink light . Then the Ice Rider Calyrex VMAX gets cartoony as Peony clings on for life while her Pokemon takes on its Gigantamax form.

You know what I just realized, though? Glastrier and Spectrier get no respect from the Pokémon TCG! Calyrex fuses with these Pokémon to become Ice Rider or Shadow Rider Calyrex, yet we have yet to receive a card featuring either of these unfused species. I hope we will get there before the end of the Sword and Shield era, as I would personally like to see a Spectrier V. A map with Calyrex alone would also be cool, but it looks pretty much like Calyrex as pictured above without a horse.
