Motorcyclist killed in collision with SUV in Escondido
A cyclist on a dirt bike was killed Thursday afternoon after speeding down an Escondido sidewalk and into an intersection where he collided with an SUV, police said.
The incident happened around 12:30 p.m. on Bear Valley Parkway at Hayden Drive, just south of Valley Parkway, Escondido Police Lt. Scott Walters said in a news release.
Police say the motorcyclist was riding a 2006 Yamaha YZ450F – a dirt bike designed for off-road use that is not street legal – and was traveling north on the sidewalk along Bear Valley Parkway when he turned on a red light at Hayden Drive.
The biker – whose identity police were unaware of Thursday evening – pulled over to the street just as a 30-year-old Escondido woman was turning left into a 2018 Lexus NX300 from Hayden Drive onto Bear Valley Parkway, said Walters.
The dirt bike rider rammed the SUV and suffered serious injuries, according to Walters, who said a 911 caller reported someone at the scene performing CPR on the victim before authorities arrived. . Paramedics took the injured man to Palomar Medical Center, where he died.
The accident did not injure the driver of the SUV.
