Rescue efforts by firefighters were hampered by rough terrain and narrow trails inaccessible to heavy trucks. Additionally, high temperatures hovered around 100 degrees on Saturday.
To expedite the rescue, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department “Rescue 9” helicopter was called into service. The helicopter crew spotted the downed jumper and a rescuer was lowered to the site. The victim was hoisted and transported a short distance to a landing zone at the intersection of Ethanac Road and Big Bear Street in Perris. A ground ambulance on standby transported the rider to a local hospital for treatment of moderate injuries, authorities said.
