Created by Gary Friedrich and Mike Ploog, Ghost Rider/Johnny Blaze first appeared in Spotlight on Marvel #5 in 1972. Since then, several other Spirits of Vengeance have joined the Marvel Universe, including fan favorites like Danny Ketch, Robbie Reyes, and Cosmic Ghost Rider. To celebrate Ghost Rider’s 50th anniversary, Marvel announced in October 2021 that 2022 would be “the year of revenge”, giving the character a new ongoing series led by Percy and artist Cory Smith.
Ghost Rider: Revenge Forever is about to sneak into Percy and Smith’s current ride, while telling new stories about the other Ghost Riders. Continuing to talk about crafting the one-shot, Percy said: “I did it by interweaving a larger story – about Johnny Blaze in the present – with smaller stories that spotlight Danny, the Midnight Sons, Ghost Rider 2099, and more, so much and so much more, including never-before-seen iterations of the Spirit of Vengeance.” Percy also promised that a new character would be introduced to the ghost rider mythos, a “haunting character” named “Necro the tattoo artist”.
“[Necro the Tattooist] brings to the surface the secrets we carry under our skin,” Percy said of the character, before praising Ryp for his work on the issue. “Juan Jose Ryp is the artist assigned to this special anniversary issue, and it is particularly brilliant for warding off beautiful nightmares. Get ready: this problem will leave its burnt rubber mark on you.”
The last ghost rider The run began in February 2022 and has only published two issues at the time of writing. The title reset the status quo for Johnny Blaze, giving him amnesia, a horrifying dream life, and new struggles keeping the spirit of revenge at bay. Percy told CBR in an exclusive interview that while it’s “awesome” that the ghost rider the mythology has grown so much over the years, it aims to tell a character-centric story of Johnny Blaze with a “back to basics approach”, calling the horror book title “deeply disturbing with a bad mood , a tempered shadow-atmosphere.”
But Ghost Rider: Revenge Forever #1 has no official August 2022 release date, the book will be written by Percy with interior art by Ryp and cover art by Björn Barends. Ghost Rider celebrates its 50th anniversary the same year other Marvel heroes mark milestones, including Spider-Man, Thor, Hulk, Luke Cage, and Carnage.
