The American Legion Riders was started from an idea conceived in the State of Michigan during the early 90’s. Pennsylvania’s awareness was furthered when contact was made with the Colorado American Legion Riders, while they were preparing for their annual Cripple Creek rally in 2001. Pennsylvania organizer Bob DeMarcki joined the ranks of the Colorado group with the intent of expanding the “Riders” in Pennsylvania. He teamed up with fellow American Legion member Bill Miller, in a “kitchen table” organizing campaign.
Initial efforts were directed toward finding a host post. Post #820 of Monroeville answered our call. Next we needed to enlist a core group of individuals to serve as officers and the driving force for a dynamic organization thus the American Legion Rides of Gold Star Post #820 was established. The Riders objectives are to increase public awareness and support through: monthly and/or weekly rides, selective parade participation, charitable events, programs and functions for our local Veterans, Veteran’s Hospitals and Veteran’s Homes. We encourage our members to become involved in bringing back Veterans ideals while leading the way in rebuilding American Legion membership.
We love to feel the wind in our face and enjoy the benefits of being welcomed at other Posts. We enjoy being able to ride for causes in which we believe and the camaraderie that goes with it. These are the things our POW-MIA’s gave us with their sacrifice to God and Country and we must never let them be forgotten.
American Legion Rider membership at Gold Star Post #820 Monroeville is open to individuals 21 years of age or older, with a minimum 500cc motorcycle registered in their name, or their spouse’s name, who are (or become) members of the American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, or Sons of the American Legion.
Any resident of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania who is interested in furthering these worthy causes or enjoying our camaraderie, are welcome to join us by calling Post #820 (412) 372-9713 or emailing Bob DeMarcki at wpalegionriders@aol.com
