AN URGENT CALL TO ACTION

Give Our Veterans The Honor Promised

Entry Last Updated: Tuesday, 19-Feb-2008 13:24:00 EST

The shocking truth is that, all across our country, the cremated remains of Veterans are "warehoused", for lack of a better term, in mortuaries of hospitals, nursing homes, and funeral parlors.

At one time, each of these Veterans committed their very lives in service to our country. For our part, we promised each of them a hero's burial. For many Veterans - those without family, or whom their families have forgotten - this promise was never made good upon. Many of our heroes have passed away alone and forgotten in hospitals and nursing home facilities, only to be cremated and stored away in cans and boxes like so much unwanted garbage.

It is our duty to help find the remains of our Veterans, and commit them to eternity in a manner befitting those who served our country. Please join us in locating caches of "cremains", identifying our veterans among them, and reporting their names and locations to the DOD and VA so that they may be interred with the dignity and honor they earned and so deserve.

Please watch this newsclip, courtesy of KSDK NewsChannel 5, St. Louis, MO and then visit the Missing In America Project for more information.

"The country which forgets its defenders will itself soon be forgotten."

NALRIC Requires Funding To Stay Afloat

Entry Last Updated: Thursday, 22-Jan-2009 18:21:21 EST

Our webhost has provided us a free ride since the NALRIC's inception in 2002. With current economic conditions, the donations which have sustained our host have dwindled. As of 22 January 2008, hbd.org has only $230 against annual operating expense of about $3500.

Our host, Home Brew Digest, Inc., is a Michigan nonprofit corporation, and is registered with the IRS as a not-for-profit, educational corporation. No-one makes a profit through its operations, and no-one is charged for its services nor access to its content.

Please consider popping them a few dollars to help keep them - and the NALRIC - afloat. Donations can be made via PayPal to serverfund@hbd.org (or, for your convenience, you can simply click this button and set the multiple of $5 you wish to donate.)

If you prefer, checks made payable to "Home Brew Digest" can be mailed to

HBD Server Fund
PO Box 871309
Canton, MI 48187-6309

Under IRS rules, Home Brew Digest, Inc. qualifies as a 501(c)3 charity due to its stated purpose and regularly raising not more than $5,000 annually (See IRS rules for 501(c)3 entities not required to file Form 1023). As such, your donation to Home Brew Digest, Inc. may be tax deductible. Please consult with your tax advisor.

UPDATE YOUR CHAPTER INFORMATION!

Select Chapter Data Form Link And Submit Current Information

Well since the first of the year has come and gone it is once again time for everyone to update their chapter contact information.

Last year out of 500+ chapters I received less than 300 data sheets from around the country. This means that there are a couple of hundred chapters out there that do not have their updated info on file with us.

Please take a few minutes to fill out a chapter data sheet located on the home page of this site and send it off to us. Your information goes no farther than here and all data sheets are held in the strictest of confidence. Pat Babcock and myself are the only ones that see them. Also PLEASE completely fill in all the information requested including email addresses and help make my job a little easier. Let us know that you are out there and who you are.

It is important that everyone keeps their contact info up to date so now is your chance to get caught up if you haven't done so recently.

Rolling Thunder News

Important information for all ALR members going to Rolling Thunder

Regrettably, there will be no ALR presentation of the wreath at The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier this year. Arlington received more requests for 29 May than they had available time slots, even at the early date at which we had submitted our request.

We will still organize a ride to Arlington at which we will all gather in respectful silence at the Tomb, observing other group wreath presentations as we would have our own. We would like as many of the ALR in attendance as possible to also wear ALR berets. Past presenters are invited to wear the shirts provided at their presentation as well. Note, too, that those designated to present this year will be the presenters for next year's ceremony (Kentucky, New York, Ohio, and Wisconsin).

Watch this site for more details on that ride as they are developed.

Anyone with experience as a Ride Captain or a blocker is welcome to help manage the ride to Arlington - a member of the NALRAC (or their assign) will be designated as contact for this at the Residence Inn closer to the date.

As always we are staying at the Residence Inn in Fairfax, Virginia. A block of rooms have been reserved for Thursday 27 May 2010 through Tuesday 1 June 2010, but must be reserved by 6 May 2010 (or before the block is used up...) Use group code ALRALRA to reserve a Studio room for $109/night; use group code ALRALRB to reserve a 1-Bedroom room for $109/night - please be considereate. If it is you, alone, and you will use restaurants for your meals, we ask that you reserve a 1-Bedroom room and leave the Studio-style rooms for larger, room-sharing groups. The hotel is located as follows:

We are still planning our annual barbecue at the Residence Inn Saturday evening. BYOB, and a dish to pass!

Again, watch the NALRIC website (AmericanLegionRiders.net) for more details and check the site just prior to Memorial Day weekend for any time changes or added events.

A Note About Advertising Events on NALRIC...

In the past, I would put three-line "ads" with links for events submitted by various Chapters and organizations.

Due to the ever-growing size of the ALR (we've added over 650 Chapters since I started this website! There were only 50 back then...) and the ever growing "life" responsibilites, I'm afraid I can only continue to do this for things of distinctly national interest. (The few of regional interest remaining will be removed at their conclusion.)

Fret not! Your humble webmaster has seen to the task: you can enter your events on the National Events Calendar and as a story or event within the Regional Information Center. Click on ALR National Events Calendar and/or Regional ALR Information above to do so

Note that your submission will not be immediately displayed. To prevent SPAMmers and others from hijacking these facilities for their purposes, all entries must be reviewed and approved before they become visible. I normally check for new entries several times daily.

Thanks!

GOLD STAR MOTHERS MONUMENT

Entry Last Updated: Wednesday, 23-Jul-2008 16:27:12 EDT

American Gold Star Mothers, Inc., Chartered by Congress 80 year ago, is coordinating efforts to erect a monument in Washington DC.

Our nation's capitol, the place of honor for our fallen military and home of our founder, should be the place for a lasting tribute to all Gold Star Mothers - past, present, and future. These are special women who nurtured their children, instilled in them a sense of duty and honor, and ultimately sacrificed their sons and daughters in service to our great nation. Their losses have been tragic, yet their spirit has remained strong, donating million of hours to veterans' hospitals and many other community service endeavors.

Veterans who were able to return home to experience the joys and sorrows of life can each recall a buddy who did not make it home. That buddy had a mother whose heart was broken, but who remained proud of their child's service to his or her Country. It is that woman and all mothers who have lost their children in service to this great country that are to be honored through this monument - a monument for the entire world to see.

Any amount donated will help fund the completion of this monument - every little bit helps. Also, since the AGSM enjoys 501(c)3 status, all donations are deductible under IRS rules. Checks or money orders made payable to AGSM National Monument Fund can be mailed to:

AGSM National Monument Fund
2128 Leroy Place NW
Washington DC 20008

Visit www.gsmmonument.org and watch our progress.

ALR CALL TO ACTION: Consider holding Poker Runs and other fundraisers for this worthy cause. The mothers who have lost children in service to our country deserve this honor. Let's do our part to see that it comes to fruition! It would be great to see the ALR as major contributors to such a worthy effort.

-Bobcat

Care Packages to Our Personnel In Iraq

Entry Last Updated: Monday, 01-Oct-2007 11:57:38 EDT

Looking for a way to support our troops?

Here's an opportunity to send some goodies along to a unit right out on the border in Iraq. They have a .177 pellet gun they use to entertain themselves with when not out working on the border, and can use some pellets for it! Also, these folks don't get a lot of care packages, so wend along some goodies and other things to make their time out on the front lines a little more bearable.

Send your care packages to:

LET'S SAY THANKS!

Entry Last Updated: Wednesday, 15-Aug-2007 23:04:48 EDT

If you visit www.letssaythanks.com, you can select a patriotic graphic designed by a child and type in a personal message to one of ou soldiers deployed to Iraq. Xerox will then print the card you made, and mail it to one of our American soldiers in Iraq. You can't choose who to send it to, but I'm pretty sure the recipient will be pleased to have it nonetheless! Let's show them how many cards to our men and women over seas the American Legion Riders can generate!

FOR THE WOUNDED

Entry Last Updated: Wednesday, 15-Aug-2007 23:04:48 EDT

Not only is Balboa Naval Hospital receiving our injured heroes but the medical facilities at Camp Pendleton are also at near "No Vacancy" populations. In the latter case it's not money that is needed for our wounded Marines at Pendleton but stuff.

Here's why and what they need: At the beginning of Operation Iraqi Freedom, some of the spouses of the deployed Marines put together hundreds of recovery baskets in anticipation of wounded Marines arriving at our military hospitals. The purpose behind these baskets was to provide the wounded with personal items to be used during their hospital stay and to help fill up their days while being confined in the hospitals. However, due to the higher than anticipated numbers of wounded, they are all but out of the supplies to outfit these baskets.

They are in need of the following items: nonperishable food (snacks and candy), DVDs, all sizes of batteries, phone cards, Game Boy games, books and magazines, Domino's Pizza gift certificates (they deliver on base), towels and wash cloths, and hygiene gear (razors and shaving cream).

These items can be sent to:
